Small Business

Small businesses are one of the largest employers in the U.S. Today there are over 33 million small business in the U.S. that employ a majority of the U.S. workforce. Generally, all small businesses have at least some intellectual property. Patents, trademarks, and copyrights are easy ways to protect your intellectual property from being ripped off and/or stolen from other business.

Protecting your intellectual property may be essential to growing your small business. Being able to distinguish your small business from other businesses may lead to increased growth and increased revenue.

Before you begin your journey to start and create your small business, determine if there is any intellectual property your small business may possess. Need help or are unsure on how to determine what intellectual property you have, contact CTLG for an intellectual property review of your small business to determine what type of intellectual property strategy you should pursue.

If you have already started a small business, you may have wondered if your small business has or is creating intellectual property and how to protect it. Contact CTLG to determine what type of intellectual property strategy you should pursue.

Small businesses are the life blood of the U.S. economy. So much so the U.S. government has created funding through Congress to encourage growth with the small business community. Funding through programs such as SBIR, STTR, and TABA are all ways you can help your small business grow. Additionally, visit the Small Business Agency website at sba.gov for other forms of assistance and material you can use to grow your small business.

The United States Government has set aside over 2.2 billion dollars to stimulate technological innovation in the private sector of the U.S. economy through SBIR and STTR. The SBIR and STTR programs comprise three phases.

When starting a small business to pursue SBIR and STTR funding, you may be asked, or chose, to participate in the TABA program. The TABA program will be used by participating US government agencies to determine if your small business is ready to move through SBIT and STTR funding. This may be helpful if your small business is trying to overcome technical, commercializing, and marketing problems. TABA also allows US government agencies to directly fund your small business with funds outside of TABA, SBIR, and STTR.

The TABA program comprises two phases.

  • Phase 1: Concept Development
    • Up to 6,500 in funding
  • Phase 2: Prototype Development
